A low carbon odyssey to rediscover the soul of European surfing
The Way of the Waves
Hello! Welcome.
You won’t find the classic, sun-chasing, surfers’ journey through France, Spain and Portugal marked on any map. Yet almost every surfer travels its invisible line at some point. It’s a rite of passage, dictated by tide and swell, punctuated by croissants, Portuguese pastries, whomping waves and an ever changing littoral landscape.
Lizzy and I (Martin Dorey) invite you to join us as we set off in May 2024 on an epic pilgrimage to join it all up in one single journey from our home in Bude to Sagres in the south of Portugal. We will be riding e bikes with trailers and surfboards with the intention of surfing and swimming as much as we can. We’ll be travelling unsupported, following in the footsteps of those who went before.
This will be a surf trip with a difference: a slow, low carbon odyssey through Western Europe’s littoral landscapes to rediscover a little of its surfing history, and the people who made it famous.
The Way of The Waves will become a book to be published by Bloomsbury in 2025. For snippets, as well as up to date posts about the journey as we do it, CLICK HERE to go to the blog page.
35 years of exploring Europe
I have been surfing in Europe, on and off, for over 35 years. Now, after recovering from a serious knee injury I am hoping to surf & cycle my way to Portugal. Let’s hope I can still do it!
Thousands of miles by bike
Lizzy has cycled across Europe, in Norway and in Argentina, crossing the Andes, twice, by bike. Now she’s combining her love of bikes with her love of surfing - on an amazing adventure to follow the Way of the Waves.
